Beyond the Super Square: At the Corner of Art & Architecture is a three-day conference designed to draw attention to an important historical period of modernist architectural production in Latin America and the Caribbean that, 50 years later, continues to resonate among contemporary artists. Held on October 28–30, 2011, the conference strives to contextualize the impact of modernist architecture throughout the Americas through a series of panels and presentations by architects, urban planners, and contemporary artists.

Beyond the Super-Square inaugurates
with The Architecture Challenge! In lieu of a traditional opening night
lecture, our conference speakers will come together as contestants to test
their knowledge of modernist architecture in a playful game show style
competition. Our charming hosts, Eva Franch i Gilabert (Director, Storefront
for Art and Architecture) and Pedro Reyes (artist) will grill conference
participants on the most obscure architectural facts.
This evening of game and celebration is conceived by artist Pedro Reyes and organized by The Bronx Museum of the Arts in collaboration with The Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School.

Masterworks by modernist Latin American and Caribbean architects such as Mathias Goertiz, Lina Bo Bardi, Max Borges, Mario Pani, and Carlos Raul Villanueva, among others, will be evaluated through the unique perspective of contemporary artists to offer a broad critical understanding of the transformative environments that hailed Latin America’s transition into modernity.

THE GARIFUNA NATION

A feature-length video documentary, “The Garifuna Nation,” presents a cultural encounter between two distinct Afro-Caribbean experiences: Afro-Puerto Rican and Garinagu (also called Garifuna). Through these two parallel perspectives, the video looks into how the slave experience has historically played itself out in different ways and how circumstances determine who we are today. Having escaped the ravages of slavery in the Americas, a group of West Africans joined with Carib Indians to form the Garifuna culture that has survived for over 212 years -- on self-reliance, sacred spirit-possession practices and dance moves. Now, the Garinagu people must face the challenge of interfacing western lifestyles and modern technology with the long-held values regarding their community.

OPEN HOUSE: MUNTADAS: INFORMATION >> SPACE >> CONTROL
Antoni Muntadas, who was born in Barcelona and has lived and worked in New York since 1971, is best known for his multimedia works and public art installations that address social and political issues. The works included in MUNTADAS: INFORMATION >> SPACE >> CONTROL focus on the relationship between public and private space, the media, how information is conveyed, interpreted, and manipulated, and the way that public opinion is shaped.
“Muntadas has worked on information theory for decades, and his work is more relevant than ever today,” said Bronx Museum of the Arts Director Holly Block. “We are pleased to present this survey of works by Muntadas, originated by the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, in Brazil, and we welcome audiences to explore the role information and its dissemination play in our everyday lives.”
